Professional vs DIY Upholstery Cleaning in Terrell Hills

A fresh spot on the right fabric is a fair DIY job. A sofa that's dull all over, or a fabric with no tag, is where it stops being one.

Can I clean my own sofa, or should I hire someone?

You can handle a fresh spot yourself if the fabric's tag allows the cleaner you're holding. Once the whole sofa looks dirty, or there's no tag to go by, it's a job for a professional. An X tag is the exception: vacuum or brush it only.

That isn't only our view. The La-Z-Boy fabric and leather care page recommends regular vacuuming or light brushing to keep soil down, and it says to use a professional furniture cleaning service once a piece reaches an overall soiled condition. Spot cleaning at home and a full clean are two different jobs, and most of the trouble comes from treating the second like the first.

What does the tag on my sofa actually tell me?

It gives you a cleaning code, and that code decides what you're allowed to put on the fabric. La-Z-Boy says the code is on the tag attached to the furniture. The Sailrite guide to upholstery fabric cleaning codes adds that if a piece has been reupholstered, you should check with the fabric manufacturer instead, because the old tag describes the old fabric.

What each upholstery cleaning code allows under the La-Z-Boy and Sailrite care guides, and how much of it is a home job

Read the letter before you buy a cleaner. It saves you guessing on a fabric you can't undo.

What goes wrong when people clean a sofa at home?

Mostly too much liquid. La-Z-Boy's instructions for both W and S fabrics say not to saturate, and Sailrite warns against over-wetting a stain. Keep the cover damp, not wet, so the cleaner stays on the fabric and away from the cushion underneath.

Rings come next. La-Z-Boy tells you to clean a spot from the outside toward the middle to prevent circling. Scrub from the center out and you push the stain into a wider ring that's harder to shift than the spill was.

Then there's the cleaner itself. Sailrite says to test any product on a small, hidden patch first, so you know it won't leave a spot or make the colors bleed. The bottle saying it's safe for upholstery doesn't mean it knows your fabric.

Then the rented machine. La-Z-Boy doesn't recommend steam or hot water extraction on its W fabrics, while Sailrite allows a carpet cleaner's upholstery attachment. They disagree, so read your own maker's care sheet first.

How do I spot clean a W-coded sofa safely?

Keep it small and slow. Most of these steps come from the Code W instructions on the La-Z-Boy care page, the cloth tip comes from Sailrite, and the final drying step is ordinary common sense.

  1. Blot a fresh spill straight away with a clean, absorbent cloth instead of rubbing it.
  2. Test your water-based upholstery shampoo or foam on a hidden area, such as the back of the sofa.
  3. Apply the cleaner sparingly so the fabric is damp and never soaked.
  4. Work from the outside edge of the mark toward the middle.
  5. Brush a pile fabric with a nonmetallic, stiff-bristle brush to bring its look back.
  6. Let the area dry fully before anyone sits on it.

If the mark hasn't moved after one careful round, stop there. A second, wetter attempt is usually how a small spot turns into a ring.

When is it time to call a professional?

When the job stops being a spot. A W, S or W/S sofa that's gone dull and gray across the arms and seat cushions needs an even clean over the whole piece, and that's the overall soiled condition La-Z-Boy points to a professional service for.

Call as well when the tag says S and you'd rather not handle solvents at home, when there's no tag at all, or when an earlier home attempt has left a ring. A piece you'd hate to replace is worth the call too, since one wrong product on it can't be undone.

And the unflattering bit for us: one fresh coffee drip on a W fabric that lifts with a blot doesn't need a crew. Save the call for the jobs above.

Does living in Terrell Hills change any of this?

The tag rules are the same in every house. What's local is the setting. According to the City of Terrell Hills history page, it was promoted as a residential addition in the late 1920s, about five miles northeast of downtown San Antonio, and it incorporated in 1939.

If a sofa in an older house has been recovered, or an inherited chair lost its tag years ago, you're in the no-tag row of the table. Treat the fabric as unknown until someone who knows it says otherwise.

The local year matters for the DIY half. Cedar and oak pollen settle on furniture in season, so regular vacuuming with the upholstery tool, under the cushions too, does more between cleans than any spray will.

We cover Terrell Hills along with Alamo Heights, Shavano Park and the rest of San Antonio. Call or text (210) 300-0003, or use the free quote form, and you'll hear back the same business day.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a carpet cleaner on my couch?

Check the tag first. La-Z-Boy doesn't recommend steam or hot water extraction on its W-coded fabrics, and an S or X code rules out water altogether. Some fabric suppliers are more relaxed, so follow the maker's care sheet for your piece, and don't guess on the whole sofa.

What if my sofa has no cleaning tag?

Treat the fabric as unknown. If the piece was reupholstered, the original tag no longer describes it, so ask the fabric maker. Until you know, stick to vacuuming and blotting fresh spills with a dry cloth.

Can I take the cushion covers off and wash them?

A zipper isn't a washing instruction. La-Z-Boy's care page says cushion covers shouldn't be removed and laundered on its W-coded fabrics, or removed and dry cleaned on its S-coded ones. Leave them on unless the maker says otherwise.

How do I know a stain needs a professional?

On a W, S or W/S fabric, call when the mark has already been scrubbed and spread into a ring, when it covers more than one cushion, or when the whole sofa has gone dull and gray. Call too if the tag says S or there's no tag at all. An X tag is different: it means vacuuming and light brushing only. One fresh spot on a W fabric that lifts with a blot usually doesn't need us.
