What does post-construction cleaning include after a remodel?
Think of it as the dust half of the cleanup. Sanding and cutting leave a fine layer on door-frame tops, sills, cabinet shelves and floors, often in the rooms around the work as well as the one that was remodeled. The offcuts and the dumpster are a separate job.
Scope varies a lot from one cleaning company to the next, so ask which rooms and which surfaces your quote covers. Another cleaning company's post-construction cleaning page is a useful comparison, because it names the hidden places dust settles and treats each floor by its surface.
Do I need a crew, or can I clean up myself?
It depends on how far the dust traveled. A one-room paint refresh is a weekend job with a vacuum. A kitchen gut where the AC ran the whole time is a different thing entirely. Find your remodel in the table below.
| Your remodel | Where the dust usually ends up | What we'd suggest | Air ducts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paint or cabinet refresh with no sanding | The room itself | Clean it yourself with a vacuum and a damp cloth | Leave them alone |
| Kitchen or bath remodel with the registers sealed | The work area and the rooms beside it | A post-construction clean of those rooms | Usually leave them alone |
| Remodel where the AC ran during dusty work | Through the house and into the system | A whole-home post-construction clean | Check the supply registers for dust |
| Addition or whole-floor renovation | Every room, carpets and grout lines included | A post-construction clean after the last trade leaves | Check the supply registers for dust |
| Pre-1978 house where the work disturbed paint | Possibly lead dust from old paint | Talk to the certified renovation firm first | Ask the renovation firm first |
If your remodel sits in the first row, you don't need to call anyone. Save the money for the jobs further down.
What should the quote cover?
Go room by room and ask out loud. Fine dust settles on anything flat, so the list is longer than people expect: tops of door frames and cabinets, ceiling fan blades, light fixtures, window sills and tracks, inside drawers and cabinets that were open during the work, baseboards, outlet covers and the grilles on your vents. Then the floors, last, because everything above them drops onto them.
Ask about the rooms next door too. A remodeled kitchen tends to share air with the living room and the hallway, and dust follows the air. If a room had its door shut and a towel along the bottom the whole time, say so, and it may not need much.
Floors are where a general clean and a specialist clean split apart. Grit worked into carpet by work boots usually needs more than a vacuum, and our carpet cleaning uses hot-water extraction with pre-treatment of traffic lanes for exactly that kind of path. Tile and grout get high-pressure hot water and then a seal, and wood floors get a low-moisture clean.

Should the air ducts be cleaned after a remodel?
Only if the dust actually got in. The EPA's air duct cleaning guidance says that during construction or renovation work that produces dust, you should seal off the supply and return registers and not run the heating and cooling system until the dust is cleaned up.
If the system ran during sanding, look at the supply registers once the house is clean. The same EPA page lists ducts clogged with excessive dust and debris, or particles actually coming out of the supply registers, as a reason to consider cleaning them. It also says a light amount of household dust in ducts is normal. So dust actually blowing out of the registers when the AC kicks on is worth a call. A light film inside the duct, on its own, usually isn't. We go through that question in more depth in our post on whether air duct cleaning is worth it.
Whatever you decide about the ducts, swap the filter once the work is done. The same EPA guidance advises changing filters regularly and more often if they clog.
What if my Shavano Park house was built before 1978?
Check before anyone sands or scrapes paint. According to the Texas State Historical Association's entry on Shavano Park, the land was sold in 1947 to Wallace Rogers and Sons for residential development, the city incorporated in 1956, and it kept growing through the 1970s. So it's worth checking the build year on an older house here before a remodel starts.
That year matters because of a federal rule. The EPA's lead renovation, repair and painting program page says anyone paid to do work that disturbs painted surfaces in a home built before 1978 has to be certified, with workers trained in lead-safe work practices, and the EPA recommends homeowners hire a lead-safe certified contractor for that work. Lead work isn't one of our services. If your project falls under that rule, book any cleaning only after the certified firm has finished its lead-safe work.
Who handles what on a Shavano Park permit job?
On a contractor-run job, the paperwork and the dumpster sit with your builder, and the cleaning comes last. The City of Shavano Park's permit page says residential permits and contractor registrations go through MyGovernmentOnline, inspections are scheduled there, and contractors renting a dumpster in the city have to use Republic Services.
For the cleanup, that means two practical things. Book the clean for after the last trade and any final inspection, so nobody walks fresh grit across a finished floor, and make sure the dumpster and the offcuts are gone before the crew arrives.
