What happens when a carpet cleaner comes to an Alamo Heights home?
With us, the visit follows a short, predictable order, and the firm quote comes before any work starts. Then we pre-treat the spots and the traffic lanes, then clean the carpet by hot-water extraction, which flushes the pile and pulls the dirty water back out.
The part people don't expect is how much the preparation matters. Room sizes, a vacuum the day before, a clear floor and a note on what caused each stain all change what the extraction can do.
What makes carpet in Alamo Heights different?
Start with the age of the place. The Handbook of Texas entry on Alamo Heights puts the city off US Highway 281, five miles northeast of downtown San Antonio. It says growth picked up from 1909, and in 1922 residents voted to become their own city instead of being annexed. It's an established place. If your house is one of the older ones, you may have carpet in some rooms and wood floors with rugs in others, which changes what the visit covers.
Then there's what blows in. Cedar and oak pollen settle on everything in season, and with the AC running most of the year, fine dust keeps moving through the rooms and ending up in the pile. Carpet near the back door and along the hallway usually looks it first.
How do you get the rooms ready?
Start a day or two out. The Carpet and Rug Institute's guide to hiring a cleaner says to measure the area before you get on the phone, because room sizes vary, and it calls vacuuming before a deep clean critical to the end result. Then work through this list.
- Measure each carpeted room, or at least jot down rough sizes, before you call for a quote.
- Vacuum slowly the day before, using the edge tool along baseboards and in corners.
- Ask on the phone who moves the furniture, so nobody is surprised on the day.
- Clear lamps, plants, cords, shoes and anything breakable off the floor and low tables.
- Make a short list of the spots that worry you and what caused each one.
- Find your carpet warranty if you have it and check what it says about professional cleaning.
- Plan where pets and small children will be while the rooms are being cleaned.
What does the crew do on the day?
The order below is what our carpet cleaning service follows. The right-hand column is what helps from your side.
| Stage | What happens | What helps from your side |
|---|---|---|
| Quote | You get a firm quote before any work starts | Room sizes and the list of problem spots |
| Arrival | Background-checked, performance-reviewed people come in | A clear path from the door to each room |
| Pre-treatment | Spots and traffic lanes are treated first | Telling us what caused each stain |
| Cleaning | Hot-water extraction flushes the pile and pulls the water back out | Pets and children kept out of the room |
Ask us on the day how long to keep heavy traffic off the carpet, since it depends on the pile and the weather.

How do you keep the carpet clean afterwards?
Mostly with a vacuum and a white cloth. The Carpet and Rug Institute's care page says to vacuum at least once a week and to blot spills with a plain white cloth or paper towel. It warns against scrubbing or using a brush, because that can fray the fibers and change the texture.
The same page suggests mats inside and outside the door, shoes off and regular air filter changes to cut the dust coming in. With pollen in season and fine limestone dust on shoes, the entry mat earns its spot. Shaw Floors' carpet care guide adds two more: move furniture now and then so the lanes don't mat flat, and put protectors under heavy legs.
As for how often to book a professional clean, the Carpet and Rug Institute says every 12 to 18 months, and Shaw suggests every 6 to 18 months depending on traffic. Our guide to how often to clean carpet goes into what pushes a house toward either end of that range.
What about rugs on wood floors?
Treat a good rug as its own job. The Carpet and Rug Institute says to clean imported rugs to the maker's instructions or by a professional, and to hire professionals for heirloom rugs. So check the label before cleaning day, and if a rug is an heirloom, take that advice rather than lumping it in with the wall-to-wall carpet.
The wood underneath is a different surface again. Our wood floor cleaning uses a low-moisture method, and if the sofa in the same room needs it, upholstery cleaning is fabric-tested and low-moisture too. We can quote all of it in one call.
